Some unexpected headlines today . . .

New York Times Defends Rush Limbaugh Against Obama Attack - Ref's Comment: The NYT in its now typical form completely twists the truth when it comes to McCain's attack on Obama.  Obama did introduce a poison pill amendment that was intended to kill the immigration bill if the people did not kill it first.  He did it to satisfy labor interests.  The NYT completely neglects that highly relevant fact.  But the NYT always has to introduce a false equivalency with Republicans whenever they attack Democrats.  It helps to blunt the attack.  The real story here is that the NYT has called out Obama on a huge lie it is spreading in an ad about Rush Limbaugh and John McCain.  Limbaugh is accusing Obama of promoting racism, and it's hard to see how he's wrong about that.  Obama's campaign took Limbaugh's words out of the context in the worst sort of way, a way that amounts to racial demagoguery.  This story is definitely not over.  Obama has smartly avoided race discussions up to this point, but now the race issue will be at the forefront.

Arizona elections chief seeks proof of Obama's citizenship
(Reuters) - Arizona's secretary of state said Friday he had asked officials in Hawaii to verify that Barack Obama was born in their state in order for the president's name to appear on the November ballot in Arizona. Ken Bennett, who is Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign co-chairman in Arizona, said he made the request on behalf of a constituent. Earlier this year, hardline Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio announced that an investigation by his office had found that Obama's birth certificate was a forgery. ...

FILE - In this May 8, 2012 file photo, partners Anna Simon, left, and Fran Simon embrace at a rally in support of Civil Unions at the Capitol in Denver. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski, File)Minutes after President Barack Obama announced he supported gay marriage, the Democratic governor of Colorado choked back tears in Denver as he ordered state lawmakers to reconsider a civil-unions measure that Republicans had defeated the day before.

Iran may seek "tactical gain" with U.N. nuclear deal

View of the reactor at the nuclear power plant in BushehrVIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog are making headway towards a framework deal on how to tackle concerns about its atomic activity, diplomats say, a potential bargaining chip for Tehran in next week's negotiations with world powers. Iran says such an agreement is needed before it can consider a request by U.N. inspectors to visit the Parchin military site where they believe explosives tests relevant for developing nuclear weapons may have been carried out. ...

Texas town settles council election with coin flip
(Reuters) - In the small Texas town of Wolfforth, it's "Heads I win." A city council election there came down to a coin toss on Friday. After church administrator Bruce MacNair and banker Bryan Studer wrapped up last Saturday's election with 118 votes each, the men agreed to settle the town's first electoral tie with the flip of a coin. A special election to decide a winner would have cost "north of $10,000," said Darrell Newsom, city manager of Wolfforth, population 3,600, which is southwest of Lubbock in the Texas Panhandle. "That's a lot of money for a small town like this," Newsom said. ...
